GOOD TO KNOW

A long time ago, shortly after I became a Christian, Billy Graham was in Britain. His meetings were being broadcast in our town. I thought I would attend them. Each night Mr Graham appealed to his hearers to come to the front of the hall or stadium from where they were standing or sitting. The aim was to get people to make a decision of faith in Jesus Christ. This challenged me as I sat at the back in my leather jacket with my crash helmet at my feet. In my mind I thought I ought to go up to the front. Not to find out how to be saved but to show that Jesus was my Lord. I did not go up. Nor did I on the second night. I thought (in prayer), if Billy Graham says, “Even if you are already a Christian and want to show this, come up to the front”, then I will! On the third night, that is more or less what he said in the appeal. So, I went up to the front. Leather jacket and crash helmet and all.

A counsellor took me on but was puzzled when I explained that I was already a Christian. A man from the church group that I belonged to was there and came up to me. He knew that I was saved and baptised. He asked me a simple question, “What do you know?”

This ‘threw’ me! In the conversation he pointed out something from the Bible:

1 John 2:3 Now by this we know that we have come to know him, if we obey his commandments.

This conversation helped move forward in the right direction. There are many ways that God gives so that we can know we belong to Him. This Bible verse shines a light on your life. Are you obeying God? Are you living a new life? There are many ways that you can be sure about belonging to God and being born into a new, spiritual life. Here is another:

1 John 3:24 All who obey his commandments abide in him, and he abides in them. And by this we know that he abides in us, by the Spirit that he has given us.
