Rembrandt painting of the storm on Lake Galilee
WHAT?
This is a good start to a question. You are asking for information. The God of the Bible is pleased to answer you when you ask “What?”
A group of disciples watched Jesus calm a storm. They were amazed and asked:
“What kind of a man is this, that even the winds and the sea obey Him?”
Matthew 8:27 NASB
The man Jesus is still impacting people over 2000 years after his time on earth. People from all cultures, languages and nations are still filled with awe at what Jesus can do. Asking the question, “What kind of man is this?” is a great place to start your search for truth. You are reading this, so I can be confident that you care about the truth.
The Roman Governor in Jerusalem talked with Jesus but doubted the existence of truth.
Therefore Pilate said to Him, "So You are a king?" Jesus answered, "You say correctly that I am a king. For this I have been born, and for this I have come into the world, to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice." Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews and said to them, "I find no guilt in Him.
John 18:37-38
I wonder if Pilate was genuine in asking, “What is truth?” Today’s world seems to have all kinds of ‘truth’ depending on personal opinion or feelings. I heard about an unhappy young woman who protested that there is no such thing as truth! I can only protest back and ask, “Is that true?”
Our focus is on Jesus. He claimed to be the truth. He called on people to follow him and trust him. His disciples saw him able to sleep calmly through a storm and then command a storm to be calm. He could do that. How much more could he bring calm to a troubled mind that decides to trust him.
That is the challenge. Trusting someone. Trusting that it is true: what the Bible teaches about our condition, our need of forgiveness and rescue from a hopeless future. Asking the right question, asking what kind of man Jesus is
- is where you begin.
