Proverbs 23:22 Listen to your father, who gave you life, and do not despise your mother when she is old.
This verse gives a different version of the fifth commandment:
Exodus 20:12 “Honour your father and your mother, so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you.
The apostle Paul reminds us that this commandment includes a promise.
We seem to think, nowadays, that we only have to honour parents if we think they have been “good enough”. So many Christians are held up, stunted, restricted in spiritual growth and blame of bad parenting! It is one thing to “Do as you are told” when you were a child but the Scripture refers to our adult attitudes. If I feel that I cannot love and respect my parents, then I am “saying” that I cannot obey God.
Parents are human – like you. They are not perfect – nor are you. Understanding, grace and love can overcome past resentments. With God’s help we can show a different way. A way that forgives and moves on. Perhaps it is too difficult? But not for God. He will forgive you and He can help you forgive others.
