Proverbs 20:28 Love and faithfulness keep a king safe; through love his throne is made secure.
The King James Version has: Mercy and Truth …
The Hebrews words could be rendered: Loving-kindness and Trustworthiness.
Whatever we choose of these words, we must step back in amazement! Which king has ever lived to this rule? Kings, lords, leaders of this world tend to use dominance, deceit and destruction of those who oppose them. A recent leader of a powerful nation has a record of thousands of lies and mis-information!
Among Christians there have been divisions, heresies (false claims), and even wars between factions. Obviously, there is something wrong somewhere! The verse only makes sense if applied to King Jesus.
In Him mercy and truth are met together, righteousness and peace kiss each other. His Sermon on the Mount calls for love and peace – even with enemies. His holy life conquered death – even death by crucifixion. He was kept safe – God did not permit His Holy One to see corruption, the grave could not hold Him. His throne is for ever and is eternally secure.
Love does have its consequence. Its purity and power can and will deal with all the violence and lies; when He returns.
