Psalms 85:8 I will listen to what God the LORD says; he promises peace to his people, his faithful servants— but let them not turn to folly. [NIV]
Psalms 85:8 Let me hear what God the LORD will speak, for he will speak peace to his people, to his saints; but let them not turn back to folly.[ESV}
We have an opportunity to move forward as God’s people serving according to His Will. We need to listen to what He says. We want to avoid turning to our own ideas and ways. We want to meet together rather than have a meeting! The problem encountered where meeting together has no structure or purpose is that it can become just chatting. Even basic conversation for a Christian should have purpose.
Matthew 12:35-36 A good man brings good things out of the good stored up in him, and an evil man brings evil things out of the evil stored up in him. (36) But I tell you that everyone will have to give account on the day of judgment for every empty word they have spoken.
Ephesians 5:16 making the most of every opportunity, because the days are evil.
God provided gifts for all His people so that each one can serve Him fruitfully. This means that an ability or skill is anointed and achieves God’s purpose through that person. These gifts or abilities will always have an earthly connection. They will be useful and helpful and build up the church. We must never allow the idea that only one or two people are gifted and the rest are merely consumers. In 1 Corinthians ch.12, we have 9 gifts from the Spirit. They embrace words and actions.
1 Corinthians 12:7-11 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. (8) For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, (9) to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, (10) to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the ability to distinguish between spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. (11) All these are empowered by one and the same Spirit, who apportions to each one individually as he wills.
1 Corinthians 12:27-28 Now you are the body of Christ and individually members of it. (28) And God has appointed in the church first apostles, second prophets, third teachers, then miracles, then gifts of healing, helping, administrating, and various kinds of tongues.
You will see that these gifts are not self-indulgent exercises but practical input for a healthy church. Note that the gifts work out in administration (leading, governing, – KUBERNESIS = Steering), and helping (supporting – ANTILEPSIS = assistance). Such abilities are widespread in the Lord’s communities.
So we would like to encourage these two outworkings of spiritual gift by appointing Prayer Group Leaders. These gifts help a gathering to have purpose and direction (steering) and is supportive and helpful to those not so strong in faith. Such leaders will have inspiration from God through listening to Him. A gathering will have CONTENT, PURPOSE and STRUCTURE and will include everyone. Each group might have different content but our aims will be the same because we are being led by God’s Holy Spirit.
