Thoughts from the Book of Proverbs
Proverbs 1:22 “How long will you who are simple love your simple ways? How long will mockers delight in mockery and fools hate knowledge?
The question crops up in a passage about Wisdom. She is selling her wares in the market place but no-one wants them. She is bold in her criticism that people prefer to mock and turn away from useful knowledge. Reminds me of when I used to preach in the open air. Very few listened. More usual to be laughed at or just ignored. Jesus spoke about this:
Matthew 23:37 “Jerusalem, Jerusalem, you who kill the prophets and stone those sent to you, how often I have longed to gather your children together, as a hen gathers her chicks under her wings, and you were not willing.
It does seem a pity that people lose out on learning the Truth simply because they can’t be bothered to make the effort. Simple? The Hebrew word describes a silly person who is easily led astray!
All this serves as a warning to us who believe. Are we losing interest in the “deeper” things of walking with God? The current crisis has offered time to get more involved in our Faith. We read in the Bible that Jesus is the embodiment of Wisdom. He calls out to us to learn from Him.
1 Corinthians 1:23-24 but we preach Christ crucified: a stumbling block to Jews and foolishness to Gentiles, (24) but to those whom God has called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God and the wisdom of God.
Let us encourage one another to keep on keeping on and set a good example to those who are looking for answers.
